Details

Who is this course for?

Principally this programme is aimed at those who want a career in coaching, but have the flexibility to enable them to progress into a range of related sports professions. Look ahead - will you be able to spot potential champions, and if you do, will you be able to get the best from them?

What will I gain from this programme?

Our Coach Education programme gives you the chance to gain experience across the spectrum, dealing not only with the separate levels of individual performance, but also with the transition process bridging the performance groups. The course has a very strong practical element and a parallel theoretical strand. Our aim is to give you a flying start on your intended career path and arm you with the technical knowledge, organisational and coaching skills you will need, plus a greater understanding of working within structured physical activity at whichever level interests you. You will be signposted to Sports Coach (UK) courses and encouraged to develop your coaching award portfolio.

How we will support you

The Coach Education programme has a strong inclusive ethos that provides you with the support and guidance you may need from time to time. Central to this is a personal tutor system. This allocates you to specialist teaching staff who will offer academic and pastoral care, linking with the University’s student support services when required. The personal tutor will monitor and track your progress, offering guidance and support if any challenges or difficulties arise.

As a teaching team we aim to provide an inclusive learning experience to help you realise your potential.

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will study modules focused on the underpinning personal and professional competencies required for effective coaching. These modules provide a solid grounding in key areas relevant to coaching and the introduction of material specific to each named pathway enables you to make informed choices about the vocational focus you wish to pursue within the programme.

In Year 2 you will follow modules concerned with developing coaching practice as well as selecting your dedicated pathway. The pathway modules provide reinforcement, expansion and more vocationally focused application of material studied in Year 1 as well as a more detailed examination of contemporary research, coaching policy and practice, and recent issues concerned with sporting opportunities provision.

In Year 3 you will continue to enhance your knowledge, skills and understanding by studying modules focusing on how coaching theory connects with practice. Those on the High Performance Coaching pathway will conduct a piece of independent research and study Competitive Coaching. Community Sport pathway students will follow a Coach and Community Sport module and undertake a Community Sport Project to explore the relationship between coaching policy and provision.

How will I study?

Learning experiences and teaching methods include lectures, small group seminars and laboratory work, tutorials, workshops, taught practical sessions, fieldwork, directed independent study, supervised individual research and ICT based learning.

For each module you will be given a detailed module booklet that tells you what sessions are about, what to read, how you will be assessed and coursework guidance. You will be encouraged to express your own views and staff will be available to give guidance when you need it. We aim to make your learning imaginative, varied, effective and, most of all, enjoyable.

Who will be teaching me?

Each member of our teaching team is a highly experienced and enthusiastic practitioner with a real commitment to all aspects of coaching and sports performance. They are at the forefront of national and local developments in the subject and will share their ideas and interpretations to help you become a caring, reflective graduate.

How will I be assessed?

People learn in different ways, so the pattern of assessment is extremely varied and designed to ensure that you acquire a wide range of skills, particularly those required for your intended career. You will learn to write essays, projects, reports, critically analyse papers, prepare presentations, plan/deliver/evaluate teaching and coaching sessions, conduct reflective practice and propose and write a piece of original independent research. We may use formal examinations from time to time, but they never account for more than 50% of the marks for any module.

What are my career prospects?

Graduates of this programme are well placed to pursue careers in a number of coaching or allied professional occupations.

Those wishing to operate in grassroots sport are well prepared for work in youth or community sports schemes, developing participation level sport and out of school hours learning initiatives. If you select the high performance pathway the interdisciplinary preparation you receive will ensure you are well placed to help performers move along the participation-excellence spectrum.

Alternatively, you may wish to continue to continue your studies at postgraduate level.
