This programme will provide you with the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by professional disciplines within a variety of healthcare settings. You will also develop skills in research, analysis and evaluation.

The specific focus of the programme will depend on your chosen pathway. This is because the programme will help you to develop a body of knowledge that will influence your practice and the practice of others in your professional setting.

  • DipHE Clinical and Professional Perioperative Practice

2012 Entry Requirements

To join this programme you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council or Health Professionals Council.

You should demonstrate the ability to study at diploma level and practice in an environment which enables you to meet the programme outcomes.

You will have an interview with a pathway coordinator to verify that you meet the entry requirements and plan your pathway to ensure the programme will meet your individual needs.

Who is this course for?

This programme is for professionals working within a wide range of health settings who wish to build upon their own clinical experience and develop their decision-making skills in clinical and professional practice.

What will I gain from this programme?

You will learn how to question practice, problem solve, apply relevant knowledge and skills, communicate information, reflect on and in practice, and explore current health policy and its relationship to practice.

How we will support you

At the outset you will be allocated a pathway coordinator who will provide advice and support regarding your choice of diploma pathway and any subsequent changes that you wish to make during your studies as you work towards the completion of your diploma award. The pathway co-ordinator will also act as your personal tutor.

In addition, for every module you study there is a designated module leader who will provide subject-specific academic support.

What will I study?

The programme has one core module which gives you an overview of the research process. This module is designed to help you utilise appropriate evidence to support your practice. Thereafter, you will select level 5 modules from the CPD undergraduate portfolio or choose from a group of subject-specific modules if you wish to study the perioperative pathway.

Any level 5 credits that are less than 5 years old can be used to make up part of the 120 credits required to complete this programme. Up to 60 credits can be transferred in total.

How will I study?

Delivery of the programme varies between modules and may include face-to-face sessions, online distance learning, or a blended approach combining the two.

Who will be teaching me?

The teaching team have extensive experience and expertise in clinical and professional practice and are supported by guest lecturers from all professional disciplines who bring subject-specific knowledge and clinical speciality experience. This variety of perspectives makes for a rich and varied programme of learning.

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment techniques and strategies are used including written assignments, practical assessments, seminar presentations, examinations and portfolio development.

What are my career prospects?

Due to the flexibility of this programme and the wide range of modules available, you will be well-placed to either progress in your current role or consider a career change within health or associated areas.

Fees and Finance

Fees for level 5 CPD health and social care modules are determined by each module being categorised as "standard" or "hi-tech". The cost of standard level 5 modules is £346 per 20 credit module and £570 per 30 credit module for academic year 2012/13. The fee for hi tech level 5 modules in academic year 2012/13 is £404 per 20 credit module and £605 per 30 credit module. 120 credits at level 5 are required to complete a DipHE.
