2012 Entry Requirements

To join this programme you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council or Health Professionals Council.

You should demonstrate the ability to study at degree level. You should also practice in an environment which enables you to meet the programme outcomes.

You will have an interview with a pathway coordinator to verify that you meet the entry requirements and plan your pathway to ensure the programme will meet your individual needs.

It may be possible for any level 6 credits that are less than 5 years old to be used to make up part of the 120 credits required to complete this programme. Up to 60 credits can be transferred in total.

Who is this course for?

The programme is for professionals working within a wide range of health settings. If you want to build upon your own clinical experience as well as develop and exercise higher levels of decision-making and critical judgement in clinical and professional practice, then this is the course for you.

What will I gain from this programme?

You will develop an understanding of the research process in order to utilise research findings to inform your practice. The programme encourages you to question and challenge health practice to promote effective care delivery. Your knowledge base will be further supported through the academic development of research, analysis and evaluation skills.

How we will support you

At the outset you will have a pathway coordinator who will provide advice and support regarding your choice of modules and pathways and any subsequent changes that you wish to make during your studies as you progress on your pathway programme. The pathway co-ordinators will also act as your personal tutor. A work-based learning mentor will support you on modules assessed in practice.

What will I study?

There are a number of pathways available in BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Practice, meaning you can choose to study the generic route or one covering a more specific subject area. Before the start of the course you will have an interview with a pathway coordinator to help ensure your chosen pathway is the one to best meet your individual needs.

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Palliative and End of Life Care Practice (Child and Younger Person)
  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Midwifery Practice
  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Perioperative Practice
  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Paramedic Practice

There are two core modules for all pathways, a research module and a dissertation module.

The research module will help you develop skills in specific aspects of research methodology and equip you to prepare a proposal to undertake a small scale piece of research. The emphasis throughout is on the practical application of research principles to ensure that practice is evidence based.

The dissertation module offers you, with the support of an academic supervisor, the opportunity to develop your ability to work independently on a sustained piece of work-based or work-related project.

In addition to the two core modules, you will select modules from the Faculty of Health and Social Care’s undergraduate professional development module portfolio, or select specific modules for one of the seven specific pathways.

How will I study?

Module delivery approaches vary from face-to-face classroom-based activities to solely online delivery. Many modules involve a blended approach combining online study with taught sessions on campus.

Please note that it is possible to study the degree as a full award or study a module on a standalone basis.

Who will be teaching me?

The teaching team comprises research-active senior lecturers with extensive clinical and professional expertise and experience. Guest lecturers with specific subject and clinical speciality experience from all professional disciplines will also contribute to the richness and variety of the programme.

How will I be assessed?

The programme utilises a variety of assessment techniques and strategies are used including written assignments, interviews, practicals (observed structured clinical examinations), seminar presentations, examinations and portfolio development.

What are my career prospects?

Due to the flexibility of this programme and the wide range of modules available, you will be well-placed to either progress in your current role or consider a career change within health or associated areas.

You will learn how to problem solve, apply relevant knowledge and skills, communicate information and reflect on your practice.

Fees and Finance

Fees for level 6 CPD health and social care modules are determined by each module being categorised as "standard" or "hi-tech". The cost of standard level 6 modules is £380 per 20 credit module and £570 per 30 credit module for academic year 2012/13. The fee for hi tech level 5 modules in academic year 2012/13 is £420 per 20 credit module and £630 per 30 credit module. 120 credits at level 6 are required to complete this BSc (Hons) degree.

If you do not wish to study the full degree programme, it is possible to exit with the following alternative awards:
