Who is this course for?
If you want a thorough grounding in business and management practice and theory, whilst specialising in leisure and tourism management and developing vital industry contacts and experience, then this is the programme for you.
What will I gain from this programme?
The programme combines vocational and academic activity to give you the skills that are recognised and valued by employers. Through your studies you will gain the knowledge, insight and confidence to engage with a range of employers from a range of industries, with specialist knowledge in the dynamic and growing area of leisure and tourism.
What will I study?
The course combines the study of leisure and tourism with business and management.
All undergraduate Business and Management students follow the same course in year 1 of the programme. This will provide you with a thorough grounding in a range of business functions and introduce you to the environment in which organisations operate. The core modules cover an introduction to management and organisations, accounting, law, economics and information systems. You will also be given opportunities to develop a range of personal skills.
As you progress through the course you will specialise in leisure and tourism management. Year 2 will enhance your core knowledge while you follow the specialist route which includes leisure and tourism planning and understanding trends as well as the key issues in leisure and tourism markets.
In Year 3 you will study further business-related modules, further modules on your specialist route and complete a dissertation. You will examine how organisations make decisions and consider the social, environmental, political and economic impacts of leisure and tourism and how these impacts might be managed, reduced or embraced. Other modules look at the growing events industry, exploring the planning process underpinning any event, and considering the themes and issues in the management of our growing utilisation of heritage as a leisure and tourism product.
A critical part of the degree is the development of transferable skills. The programme will help you develop as a communicator, team worker and leader. You will also be helped to gain practical experience of the workplace so that you leave us with an enhanced CV.
Work-related learning and graduate enterprise are particular features of the programme and are integrated within the course in years 2 and 3. You can also choose to spend a year in industry on a work placement before starting your third year.
How will I study?
As well as preparing for and attending lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, you will spend time reading and completing coursework, including written assignments, portfolios, presentations and poster and video production. Working with business is a strong theme of the programme and the workplace will be brought into your studies as well as us providing the opportunity for you to go into the workplace.
Placement
The course provides a range of placement opportunities to aid employability. In the second year there is a short organisational study module which will require that you undertake a short project-type activity. Alternatively, you can undertake a Graduate Enterprise project.
Between years 2 and 3 there is also a sandwich option offering you the opportunity to spend a year in a supervised placement. This is becoming increasingly popular and for many students is ideal preparation for full-time employment.
Who will be teaching me?
The degree is delivered by specialists in leisure, tourism, accountancy, marketing, human resource management, e-commerce and small and medium sized enterprises. The programme team includes academically and professionally qualified staff, many of whom are active researchers who publish in academic journals. All team members are people with an energy and enthusiasm for their subject.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the programme there is a combination of different forms of assessment to test your intellectual development, vocational capability and critical thinking. Coursework often involves both individual and group-based working and includes the use of case studies and problem solving exercises. Examinations take a variety of forms, using both seen and unseen questions.
What are my career prospects?
A degree in Business and Management with a Leisure and Tourism specialism will equip you for a range of career opportunities in the leisure and tourism industries in addition to those in a variety of general business and management areas.
Typical graduate careers include events management, the arts and heritage industry, public and private leisure provision, accountancy, administration, banking, education, finance, human resource management, marketing, public and private sector management, retailing and enterprise.
