Counselling: How We Can Help You
Why should I speak to a counsellor?
Counselling can help you with many issues relating to life and study. Speaking to a counsellor can help you find solutions to problems, make positive decisions, look for ways of coping or simply just provide a safe and confidential place to talk.
Students have a lot of different reasons for talking to a counsellor. Some examples include:
- Improving assertiveness;
- Coping with course pressures;
- Managing stress;
- Dealing with family / relationship issues;
- Building confidence;
- Managing anxiety / depression.
How might counselling help me?
Counsellors don't make decisions for you or expect you to talk about anything except what you choose to talk about. However, counselling may help you to:
- Think about your life within the university - eg living with people you may not like, coping with feeling lonely or homesick;
- Think about your programme of study - eg balancing the demands of your studies with family commitments;
- Think about your life in general - eg working through those times when you feel stressed or anxious, focusing on the positives.
The situations above are only examples. Whatever the issue is, whether it is related to your course / life at university or not, our counselling service is available to you.
If you are unsure if counselling is right for you, you can always just come along to talk informally, without committing yourself to future sessions. Alternatively, you can attend one of our regular drop-in sessions held at the Health and Well-being Centre, Milton House, on a Wednesday from 2pm - 4pm.
What will the counsellors do?
Our counsellors will:
- Listen without judging you;
- Explore issues and areas of your life that are important to you;
- Help with the process of working out what you want to happen.
Sometimes you may want us to help you in planning changes, other times it is more about managing feelings and getting support.
Counsellors can help you to explore what is going on for you, look towards what you want to do differently and work with you to build up your confidence so that you can create your own solutions.
