Sporting Edge realise that learning to swim is a very important aspect of life. That’s why we offer Swimming Lessons for children catering for all abilities from the non-swimmer to the more advanced. Fully qualified and experienced teachers in a safe and positive environment teach our lessons. Children will work towards an award scheme and earn badges and certificates on achieving the set criteria for each level. Children are assessed continuously and moved to the most suitable class for their ability. Our classes are taught in a group situation, normally one teacher for up to ten children. The non-swimmer classes are unhurried and the aim to enable children to enjoy being in the water and to gain confidence in the water whilst the more advanced classes focus on specific swimming skills and improving swimming fitness.
Lessons are structured to build up confidence in the water whilst working towards improving swimming ability and techniques.
It is hoped that all participants will improve through the programme of lessons, however improvement cannot be guaranteed, as all learners are individuals with their own ability and experience. The lessons are undertaken with no guarantee of improvement.
Pre-booking is essential as places are limited.
Lessons are fun and enjoyable with badge schemes in operation to encourage children to improve their swimming ability.
The philosophy of the sessions is to keep them simple, safe and fun whilst progressively introducing basic instructional points. In addition we aim to help promote a healthier lifestyle, enjoyment and provide a foundation for personal development and future development in sport.

Descriptions of classes ( From new September block of lessons )
TADPOLES (Stage 1 Beginners) - Children begin the lessons if they are new to swimming in armbands and carry their lessons out with buoyancy aids. The lessons are based in the children developing their basic water skills and their movement through the water. Children are encouraged to develop their strength so ultimately they will be able to swim across the width on fronts and backs. [Duck 1-4, Water Skills 1]
FROGS (Stage 2 Beginners) - In this class the children are developing their confidence. The children in these classes will be working towards swimming 10m to 25m on their fronts and backs without aids and with fluency. The children will also be working on basic water skills and jumping into deep water. [Duck 5, Water Skills 2]
TURTLES (Stage 1 Intermediates) - This class may take place in the deep end and so children need to be competent swimmers across the width on their fronts and backs. In this class the children develop their swimming techniques and speed on both their fronts and backs being introduced to breaststroke and the arm and leg actions. Within this class children are further developing their water skills and water confidence and working towards gaining their 25m to 50m certificates. [Water Skills 3]
PENGUINS (Stage 2 Intermediates) – Children work over widths but are continuing to develop their swimming techniques. Children will continue with the three basic strokes with their skills being developed alongside these strokes. Through this series of lessons the children will be working towards gaining their 50m to 100m certificates. [Challenge 1, Water Skills 4]
SEALS (Stage 3 Intermediates) – In this class the emphasis is placed in technique of all four strokes with the children working on the butterfly as well as the three they are already familiar with. Children also will further develop their water skills so they can perform them with confidence in both deep and shallow water. These skills include sculling, treading water and diving. [Challenge 2, Water Skills 5]
DOLPHINS (Stage 1 Advanced) – In this class children already have gained water confidence and are becoming competent and technical swimmers. By this stage swimmers should have a firm understanding of the strokes as a whole and know when they are being performed correctly. The swimmers should be confident and be able to swim distances of up to 400m with ease. Water confidence and skills are still being developed and performed at a high standard. [Challenge Bronze + Silver, Water Skills 6]
SHARKS (Stage 2 Advanced) – in the endurance level, children begin to work on their bronze, silver gold and honours badges with swimming strokes being performed technically and fluently. Swimmers in this group will also begin to work on their pre-competition skills such as diving and tumble turns.[Challenge Gold + Honours, Personal Survival 1 + 2]
