Dr Evelyn Carnegie

Evelyn Carnegie

Head of Sport & Physical Activity

Department:Sport and Physical Activity
Work 01695 584764

Evelyn joined the Department in September 1997 following the completion of her undergraduate degree in 1992 and her Doctoral degree in 1997 at the University of Ulster Jordanstown where she had also gained extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. She took up the role of Head of Department in the academic year 2001/2002 and has since overseen the development and introduction of the current portfolio of programmes which led to a major expansion of the department, currently the largest within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She also has experience of working as a Sports Psychology consultant across a range of sports and was invited to deliver workshops at Inaugural Conference for Gaelic Football at the Northern Ireland Institute for Sport. In her role as Head of Department Evelyn is dedicated to providing students with a range of experiences which will equip them for their chosen graduate profession and to this end advocates a student centred approach from the team. Outside of academia Evelyn played Camogie for her local club and football for Eire, Shelbourne FC in Dublin and the Irish Universities for which she was awarded Full Colours from UUJ before age dictated that it was time to hang up the boots! ‘walking the dog’ is now as active as she gets.

Qualifications

PhD

Research

Evelyn’s PhD focused on the usefulness of video based demonstrations in skill acquisition in particular examining the impact which such demonstrations have in conveying much of the richness required by the observer to accurately replicate the viewed action. Her research experience in this area has led to her belief that educators continue to ignore much of the evidence base when using this particular method of instruction. Building upon this interest in skill acquisition she has a keen interest in the development of visual search strategies to aid sports performance and has most recently become part of the supervisory team for a post graduate student who is working in this area. Outside of her subject specialist area Evelyn is currently engaged in collaborative research with Edge Hill colleagues linked to Emotional Intelligence and its implications for transition, retention and achievement which is in keeping with her ethos of a learner centred approach.
