About the Sport Department
Facilities
Physiology
Our applied sport and exercise physiology laboratory hosts a range of scientific lab and field apparatus designed to measure physiological fitness. Equipment used measures aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, cardiovascular variables, VO2max, lactate profile and thresholds, heart rate training zones and body composition assessment.
Biomechanics
Sport-specific fitness testing and performance analysis is carried out in the Biomechanics laboratory. A range of equipment, including 2D and 3D motion capture systems, video analysis, electromyography, timing lights, force platform and dynamometers are used to measure technique analysis, the electrical activity of muscles, gait mechanics, jump power, speed, acceleration, agility and strength.
Psychology
The psychology lab equipment and assessment is focused towards understanding the fundamental principles of psychology, the scientific study of mind and behaviour, identifying and understanding the factors that govern motor performance, the learning of motor skills, addressing sport and exercise behaviours including elite sport performance, motivation and the influence of exercise on psychological well-being. In addition we can now provide support for applied work using eye-tracking systems to understand decision making and performance improvements in a sport setting
Our sport scientists can also provide individualised reports and provide specific advice and training recommendations to improve performance.
Sports Therapy
Students on our Sports Therapy degree have access to some of the best facilities in Higher Education. Our modern, purpose-built sports therapy clinic houses a well-equipped large study area and private consultation rooms. The facilities are used for teaching and are also available to the general public. A consultancy service is provided to individual athletes and sports teams.
