About Rose Theatre
Introduction
The Rose Theatre was built in the 1960s, originally as a venue for Edge Hill's drama students, however it threw its doors open to the public in 1993.
Since that time, the Rose has gone from strength-to-strength and developed into a well-known professional theatre that plays host to high-profile touring companies.
Throughout the year, around 75 productions take to the stage over two seasons running from January – July, and September - December.
Over the last ten years, the Rose has evolved into a stylish and comfortable theatre seating over 200 people. Its most recent refurbishment has coincided with the impressive development of Edge Hill's Centre for the Performing Arts which included the new Studio Theatre. With a capacity of 140 seats, the Studio forms an integral part of the Rose programme of events, in particular for Short Cuts Cinema film screenings, and contemporary dance productions. The introduction of an online booking facility in 2010, and the ongoing development of the Rose website, aim to make bookings and information about the Rose, easier to access.
Programmes are designed to cater for all tastes, encompassing drama, literature, dance, physical theatre, comedy, music, and theatre for children and families. Stand-up comedy is proving a huge hit with students at Edge Hill and has gained a reputation with comedy lovers from Ormskirk and surrounding areas. John Bishop, Alan Carr, Jason Manford, Sarah Millican and Dave Spikey have all done a turn on the Rose Theatre stage. Folk music continues to open up the programme to new visitors; the Rose regularly collaborates with Friends of Folk, and is a member of the The North West Federation of Folk Clubs.
For young people aged 8 – 25 years, the Rose Youth Theatre offers an exciting opportunity to do something different, try new things and develop both their confidence and performing arts skills in Edge Hill University’s state of the arts facilities. Members can gain accreditation too, reflecting a strong sense of achievement for the work they create in the Youth Theatre.
The Rose also endeavours to provide extra value to its patrons wherever possible. We aim to support Edge Hill Performing Arts student and MA performances. We also hire the Rose facilities for independent and community productions alongside the main programme. Look for the Rose Extra sign at the bottom of the page.
Look out for the Family Friendly logo, a symbol of recognition making it easier for families to take part in the arts, as audiences and participants.
