Edge Hill University Performing Arts Students present Spring Awakening and Lulu: A Monster Tragedy, by Frank Wedekind.

Spring Awakening is performed on Thursday 18^th March, 7:30pm and Saturday 20^th March, 2:30pm. Lulu: A Monster Tragedy (translated by Edward Bond and Elizabeth Bond- Pablé) is performed Friday 19^th March, 7:30pm and Saturday 20^th March, also 7:30pm.

Frank Wedekind's legacy includes two of the seminal works of modern theatre. Lulu and Spring Awakening are products of a 19^th century mind yet remain revolutionary masterpieces.

The playwright Edward Bond (here co-translator) calls Lulu "the first modern play". Wedekind's radicalism in these works is not merely a revolution of theatrical form. He presents unflinching examinations of young people's lives and passions, which retain all their power to shock.

Neither play relies on a mere series of gratuitous effects: rather we are reminded of the terrible deformation of children's lives by the actions of adults and the hypocrisy of their institutions.

Through exploring and embodying these classics of modern drama, we hope our students will speak to immediate and pressing concerns which touch us deeply, mindful of what Wedekind taught us all: "the flesh has its own spirit".
