Carole Poole
Head of Media Department
Carol Poole has been Head of Media at Edge Hill University for the past twelve years and was also Head of Art and Design at Edge Hill for two years till 2000. She graduated from Liverpool University in Political Theory and Institutions in 1979 and has dedicated most of the last 30 years to the promotion of the subject of Media related curriculum from basic education to post graduate level. In the early 1980's she worked at Liverpool University and in 1982 was appointed with a team of consultants from Helsinki under Professor Oli Kivinen to develop a department of Town Planning at the University of Garyounis in Benghazi. In 1984 she was the Executive Secretary for the Green Towns and Cities (UK/USA) Congress that influenced many of the inner city environmental lottery funding projects. In the 1980's and 1990's she to reverse inequalities through curriculum development.
She produced the first Merseyside Open College accredited programmes for adult basic education, developed New Opportunities for Women programmes in Liverpool and spent eleven years working in the community of Toxteth developing media education from a black perspective. She developed modules in higher education for Women and the Media and has published in this area. As Head of Media at Edge Hill University she has personally developed and steered some 20 undergraduate Programmes in the subject of media and has steered the curriculum towards practice based provision. She works strenuously to promote the subject in Britain and internationally and for the last three years she has been a jury member for the Hong Kong and Chinese Region Film Festival. She has been external examiner and advisor to a number of undergraduate programmes in Britain and abroad. She has postgraduate qualifications in Public Relations from Manchester Metropolitan University Business School and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. She steered the Create and Connect partnership between the BBC and Edge Hill University and is currently a member of the North West Universities Association advisory panel for Culture, Media and Sport.
She is married with one grown up son.

Research
My personal research and development has been in support of the develoment of industry relevant curriculum. Post Leitch I am especially interested in the way in which the relationship between industry and universities will develop in response to the skills agendas. Future research
Working on re-developing early research from 2005 with Alex Jukes into perception and the digital realm that was started but shelved in 2005 Interest in collaborative ethnographic research between colleagues from Liverpool University and the Department of Media at Edge Hill University into the lives of early feminist/women in Liverpool.
Carole is an Expert in
1996-7 Graduate of Merseyside Common Purpose 2003-date HEA Membership (previously ILTHE) Specialist teaching third year teaching: film, television theory and practice with specialism in documentary and media and cultural theory. Membership of the NWUA regional advisory committee for Media, Culture and Sport and I am active in a wide range of national and international events that focus on the importance and development of the creative industries. Manage a group of over twenty academic and technical staff working across a wide range of media related curriculum and research. For the last 10 years I have steered developments for wide range of undergraduate provision in media (listed below) I have delivered lectures in a range of Universities abroad and held a post for two years at the University of Garyounis, Benghazi In the past I held one of the first posts for the Liverpool Education Authority as aQuality Assurance Co-ordinator for the FE sector. (secondment to Liverpool Education Authority to develop cross college QA systems for the FE sector in Liverpool).
