Costing metrics

Abstract

There has been a number of research projects investigating the costs of e-learning or Networked Learning (JISC, Sheffield Hallam), much of which is complex and difficult to understand.

Whilst support-staff time and services are not ‘bought out’ by faculties within Edge Hill University, the focus of this workpackage is not on creating firm ‘costs’ associated through undertaking e-learning programmes, but instead focuses upon summarising the myriad of complex research in this field, and providing a distillation of key cost elements. As such, we have mocked the costs of course development for a 15-credit module within the Faculty of Health and Social Care.

The primary aim of this workpackage was to provide a basis for the development of knowledge and understanding associated to costing, that can be applied by academic staff in future developments.

This paper will be made available here shortly. Alongside the paper, we collaborated with colleagues from the DIRECT project at Reading to create a wiki (which informed the development of the paper). It also contains information that is not present in the paper, and we invite readers to contribute to the Costing Metrics Wiki - http://costingmetrics.pbwiki.com/

If you have a particular interest or expertise in this area, or if you would just like to learn more about our project, please contact Peter Reed (eQT Pathfinder Project Co-ordinator).
