Introduction

This provides a non-technical summary of the Environmental Statement which accompanies a planning application on behalf of the Edge Hill University to support its full planning application for the continued investment, development and improvement of its Ormskirk campus, comprising;

• The provision of a new landmark sports and recreation complex serving the University and wider community, on land to the east of the present campus. This will provide indoor facilities including an 8 court sports hall and a 25m swimming pool contained within a new building and surrounded by a range of natural and synthetic playing pitches, games courts and an athletics track; a number of which will also be flood-lit;
• The formation of a new signal-controlled junction with the A570 St Helens Road and a new boulevard access road to serve as the principal entrance to the whole University campus, including the proposed sports development;
• The provision of permanent landscaped car parking capacity to serve the campus, and;
• Associated ground engineering and re-contouring works and comprehensive structural landscaping, public realm and amenity space provision, including new areas of woodland planting, ecologically rich grassland, a wetland pond and formal tree and shrub planting, with a network of footpaths.
