So... what are Feeds?

Feeds are a simple way to keep track of news, forums, blogs and more on the web. Sites which provide feeds allow you to subscribe to topics of interest and be informed as soon as there is a new story, message or blog entry. It's a bit like an inbox for the web and it means you don't have to keep going back to the site to find out what's going on.

Sounds interesting... so how do I subscribe?

You really need just one thing - an Feed Reader. These are available for most types of computer, and even some newer mobile phones have an feed reader built in. Feed readers take a number of different forms:

  • Integrated into a web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer (version 7) or Opera. Look for the feed icon in the address bar.
  • A web based reader such as Google Reader or Bloglines. You have to sign up to these services but they have the advantage of being accessible from any computer with a connection to the web.
  • A stand alone RSS reader (otherwise known as an aggregator).

What's all this about RSS, Atom, XML etc?

There are a number of different types of feed including Atom and RSS. While there are differences between the formats, they provide very similar information and most modern feed readers can understand any format you throw at them.
