Geography ranks among best in country

Edge Hill University's Geography department has been placed firmly on the map as a top performer according to new figures released.

The Education Guardian University Guide league tables show that Edge Hill has beaten off stiff competition from Oxford and Cambridge when it comes to student satisfaction with 99% of geography students being happy with their course.

It places the University's Geography provision (including Human and Social Geography, Physical Geography and Environmental Science) second in the country for satisfaction with teaching (98%).

Students also score the department highly for its constructive feedback and for value-added input, fieldwork and practical assessments and the continual support that lecturers offer to their students.

Overall, Geography is ranked ahead of well-established competitors in Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester.

Dr Nigel Richardson, Head of Department for Natural, Geographical and Applied Sciences, said: "This is fantastic news for the Geography department. We get consistently high marks from our students and I think this is because we are so passionate about the subjects we teach and will always go the extra mile to ensure that students do well.

"We are almost like a small family, with real community spirit and we are always complimented for our innovative teaching methods. We also have a very strong monitoring system, or if any students need more help we are always happy to do what we can to motivate them.

"Our aim is to ensure that students get the most out of their learning environment, and from these impressive figures we know that we are certainly hitting the mark when it comes to satisfied students. We will continue to provide quality teaching and build upon this success to enhance the overall student experience."

The growing reputation of Edge Hill's Geography provision has resulted in applications to study here rising by 60% in the last year.
