Edge Hill students visit Preston prison
Following a recent talk by HMP Preston's Governor of Re-offending Paul Campbell, a number of first year Physical Education and School Sport students visited the prison to find out first-hand about prospective careers as Physical Training Instructors.
The group's productive trip to the Category B men's prison was lead by ETE Advisor, Janet Jackson and PE Officer, Paul Redfern and included a tour of the complex, observing classes, and hearing from inmates about their personal experiences of life in the cells.
As one of the most overcrowded prisons in England and Wales with an operational capacity of 480 prisoners, HMP Preston values the positive impact participation in sport, leisure and recreation activities can have on detainees. Through this continued collaboration with Edge Hill a number of students are hoping to go back soon to develop and personally deliver practical sessions with a selected group of prisoners.
Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and School Sport, Adam Burrows concludes, "Our students have been a real credit to Edge Hill in the way they conducted themselves in this unique and hostile environment. Through an opportunity such as this they can develop their own practical and theoretical knowledge while making a real difference to other people's lives."
