Anchorman breaks his career news to students
An award-winning journalist with the ability to put fear aside to cover war-torn zones is coming to Edge Hill University to talk to students about his experiences.
Sohail Rahman is currently the news and programmes presenter for Al Jazeera, the world's first independent English news channel based in the Middle East.
He has more than 20 years of television reporting and presenting experience. He has worked for Granada, ITV, BBC, Channel 4 and CNN, and he has reported from across the Middle East and South Asia. In 2003, he won the Royal Television Society's prestigious Best Television Presenter Award. He has also won the Best Presenter Award at the Asian Film Academy on three occasions.
In his first four years with Al Jazeera, where he is based in Doha, he has covered the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the Taliban uprising in Swat Valley and the horrific attacks on Mumbai.
His determination has led him to where the average correspondent wouldn't set foot and he will be telling students about the tough challenges he has faced during his career at a special masterclass on 1st October.
The free event is also open to the public and is a chance for people to listen to So's heart-wrenching stories, brushes with death and tips for future journalists.
Marc Stanton, Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University is a close friend of So's and is delighted that he has agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to visit Edge Hill.
He said: "It's a real coup to have such an internationally renowned face come to the University to talk to our students. So is a leading light within the media industry and he has such fascinating tales to tell about his career. I'm sure that students and the wider community will be as enthralled with his wonderful, challenging and sometimes dangerous stories as I am and that they take this unique opportunity to come and listen to him at our masterclass."
The event is on from 2pm to 5pm and takes place in H1 in the Faculty of Health Building. All are welcome to attend this free event. For more information, contact Marc Stanton on 01695 584726.
