Disability Awareness Day at Sporting Edge
Sporting Edge is hosting a Disability Awareness Day to bring people of all abilities together to take part in fun activities.
The event on Monday 21st June, from 10am to 4pm, is aimed at people of all ages and abilities and highlights that people with disabilities can take part in activities like any able-bodied person.
During the day there will be Wheels for All cycle challenges, football games during the morning and a charity match against police and fire service officers in the afternoon, archery lessons, short tennis sessions and trampolining as well as drama workshops.
Already more than 100 people have put their names down for the event, including disability groups, support workers and local members of the community - but there's still room for more.
It doesn't matter whether or not you have a disability as all people are welcome to come along to the event to either take part in the activities or just watch.
Claire Hamilton from Sporting Edge said: "Disability Awareness Day caters for everybody and is a fantastic opportunity to show that just because people have impairments they don't have to be treated any differently and can still enjoy leisure opportunities. It's a nice way to bring community members together from all walks of life and also to showcase the inclusive fitness provisions at Sporting Edge. Many of our staff have specialist additional disability training to ensure that you have a safe and effective workout whatever your age or disability."
Sporting Edge has achieved the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) accreditation, which is an industry standard, awarded to fitness facilities that are inclusive of all abilities.
The team has also recently launched weekly Wheels for All sessions, between 1pm and 3pm every Tuesday, where a range of bicycles, quads, tricycles, hand cycles, tandems, and chair linked cycles are available at the running track for people of all ages, disabilities and differing needs to try out. Due to popularity and current limited equipment places must be booked in advance.
