Places still left on Masters in Teaching and Learning
Research shows that quality of teaching is the single most important factor influencing how well pupils perform in school, which is why a Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is big news.
Edge Hill University's Faculty of Education is a leading provider of the practice-based MTL and has recently been recruiting Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) into the programme which, for a time, is being fully funded by the government.
The good news is that the University still has a few places available for NQTs with research showing that the best time to improve practice is early in a teaching career.
Based in the classroom and delivered in partnership with Edge Hill University, this groundbreaking three year programme is totally ‘hands-on', so everything learnt is directly relevant in school life.
It draws on a wide range of expertise both within and beyond theclassroom, where participants can learn alongside more experienced colleagues to look at problem solving and critical thinking, exploring ideas based on prior knowledge and applying these to new situations relevant to the workplace.
The MTL is driven by three key elements - engaging with current thinking; ensuring that the effectiveness of teaching and learning has a positive impact on outcomes for children and young people; and developing and working as a lifelong learner, continually enhancing personal and professional practice
Kim Grogan has recently signed up to MTL. She is a newly qualified teacher in Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, Cheshire. She said: "All my colleagues have encouraged me, saying the hard work will be worthwhile. I think I have set myself a bit of a challenge, and I can see that for some people, starting MTL in this first year at work might not be a good idea. I only finished university just over a year ago and personally I think it is an advantage to have recently been involved in academic work. The fact that MTL is based around what I do on a day to day basis will also help a lot. I have the support of the more experienced teachers around me, so I am confident I can take it on."
