Field of dreams

It wasn't all gravy browning for stockings and dancing with handsome GIs for some girls during the Second World War. Find out what happens when two naïve young women join the Women's Land Army in new comedy, Back to the Land Girls, showing at Edge Hill University's Rose Theatre on Tuesday 13th April.

It's 1942, and there are some new arrivals in the village. They're the Women's Land Army, a band of feisty young ladies who have come to replace the men who worked in the fields and on the farms before they were sent off to war. However, not everyone is pleased to see them.

Notorious for turning heads as well as turning fields, the ‘Land Girls' drive tractors, harvest crops and milk cows, breaking hearts as they go. But some girls are not cut out for farming it seems...

Buff is a city girl with dreams of being the next Vera Lynn. She's never even seen a turnip, let alone picked one. Biddy is a country girl who is "nowt but a hopeless romantic". Together they face the high and lows of life in the Women's Land Army- the backache, the blisters, the bickering and the banter - and learn all there is to know about the land and themselves.

Based on real-life accounts, Back to the Land Girls is a funny and uplifting show, which celebrates the wonderful women who made sure Britain got fed during WWII. Set against a backdrop of glorious music from the 1940s, the play also features original songs by award-winning musician Jez Lowe.

Back to the Land Girls was written and directed by Kate Bramley, founder of the Badapple Theatre Company, and former Associate Director with the acclaimed Hull Truck Theatre Company. Under Kate's leadership, Badapple aims to simply "tell good stories" and has gained a reputation for producing exciting new plays inspired by historical or biographical tales.

Performance starts at 7.30pm. Tickets: £8.50 / £6.50 concessions.
