Event launched to celebrate World Autism Day
An inspirational conference that tackles the complex issues of autism at Edge Hill University is now taking bookings.
As it approaches World Autism Day on 2nd April, the University has launched its 4th International Conference, Communication: The Key to Success in Addressing Autism/Asperger's Syndrome.
Autism is a developmental disorder that affects millions worldwide. Lots of research is being undertaken to inform and help those living or working with autism.
These latest findings will be unveiled at the conference on Friday 21st May, which has been organised by the University and Pontville School, an independent school for communication impaired children and part of the Witherslack Group of Schools.
Keynote speakers on the day include Dr. Gary Mesibov, Director of Division TEACCH at the University of North Carolina who will be discussing approaches to educational and psychological interventions with Asperger's Syndrome and high functioning autism. Dr Emma Ashwin from Bath University and a Research Associate at the Autism Research Centre in the Department of Psychiatry at Cambridge University, will present her research on the foetal testosterone theory of autism. Derek Paravicini and Paul Hughes, two motivational individuals who have autism and Asperger's Syndrome respectively, will be demonstrating how they have gone on to do great things in life.
The high-profile event is also part of the University's Shaping Futures programme to celebrate its 125th anniversary this year.
Dr Jeremy Brown, a senior lecturer at the University's Evidence-based Practise Research Centre, said: "It is important that we share information regarding autism that enables young people to progress and feel valued in society. The conference is a great opportunity for people to listen to cutting-edge new research and it also raises awareness of the current issues being investigated."
Last year's event was a huge success that attracted people from across the globe and comments included:
- "Fantastic and interesting presentations. This will definitely help in the workplace."
- "Good awareness of supporting children with autism and ways in calming them down."
- "Practical and thought-provoking. Came away with practical things to do and thoughts to develop."
- "Really enjoyed it. As a parent with a child who has recently been diagnosed the day has really helped with what I'm sure will be a long learning journey."
- "Can't wait for next year."
