Edge Hill students 'awaken' influential play
Second year Performing Arts students brought to life work by the revolutionary German writer Frank Wedekind as part of their recent course assessments.
Professionally performed for fellow students and the general public at the University's Rose Theatre, Spring Awakening was directed by Senior Lecturers Lisa Adams and James Macpherson, performed by Drama and Drama, Physical Theatre and Dance students. The set was designed by Sidsel Beck and the costume Monica Aslanian.
Written in 1891, Spring Awakening was Frank Wedekind's first major play and became an innovative piece of modern theatre. Described as a ‘tragedy of childhood', the influential play focuses on a group of classmates and explores puberty, sexuality and parental control, passionate themes which are still relevant in life today.
This powerful performance was set like an installation with the audience 'en promenade', moving from studio to foyer as the play progressed, with the final scene taking place in the grounds outside the theatre itself.
The Rose Theatre continually showcases the work of Edge Hill students as part of its programme of events, for further information visit edgehill.ac.uk/rosetheatre
