The 'F’ word comes to Liverpool

Edge Hill University will host the international Feminist and Women's Studies Association (FWSA) Conference at the Bluecoat, Liverpool, later this month.

The three-day event aims to look at the state of twenty-first-century feminism and to reflect on a wide range of social, cultural, theoretical and global transitions that have affected feminism's identity, representation, activism and politics;

The conference starts on Friday, 19 June, with a drinks reception to announce the winner of the FWSA Book Prize 2009. Unusually, the top prize will be awarded to two very deserving winners this year, since the standard of entrants in this year's competition was so high.

Leading feminist academics from across the world will converge on Liverpool to hear keynote speakers, such as the controversial American Professor, Judith Halberstam - author of Female Masculinity and In a Queer Time and Place. The event will also combine lectures, papers and workshops on the topic of ‘Feminist Transitions'.

Dr Stéphanie Genz, Senior Lecturer in Media and Culture at Edge Hill University and the conference co-ordinator, said: "This is an important time for feminism. The conference aims to account for the transitions that feminism has undergone over the last 40 years and outline future directions for feminist thinking and activism in the 21st Century."

Places at the conference are still available. For more information visit www.edgehill.ac.uk/feministtransitions
