Edge Hill + extra funding = teaching opportunities
Edge Hill's reputation for excellence in teacher training has been recognised with an award of £800,000 to fund places for nearly 100 extra trainees - the largest growth in the country.
The extra funding from the Training and Development Agency (TDA) for schools will enable the University to offer places on Initial Teacher Training programmes to an additional 92 students.
This latest award reinforces the University's position as the largest provider of services to the TDA.
Steve Igoe, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Resources), Edge Hill University, said:
"Edge Hill is proud to be recognised as the largest provider of services to the TDA. Despite a challenging economic environment which has seen most providers suffer reductions in commissions and funding, the University is delighted that the TDA has acknowledged the quality and relevance of our programmes. The additional funds will support our work in training and developing not just primary and secondary school teachers, but the whole school workforce.
"This recognition comes hot on the heels of a recent endorsement from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in which Edge Hill received the largest percentage rise in teaching funding in the country."
"The role of the University in continuing to develop provision not only in teaching but in health and other vocational activities, along with the significant investment being made in the campus to train such students, is recognised by the Government as a key objective in supporting economic activity, jobs and, crucially, the healthy communities of the future."
Edge Hill has been a centre for teacher training since 1885. Today it is the second largest provider of teacher training in the country and the largest provider of training for secondary school teachers.
The University's extensive package of Initial Teacher Training programmes, which spans the age ranges and boasts flexible study options, was voted best in the North West by final year students in the 2008 National Student Survey.
Students who complete teacher training at Edge Hill enjoy a high success rate in finding a job in their chosen profession.
In the most recent survey, nearly 90 per cent of students were working in teaching the year after they finished their course.
Edge Hill also offers a wide-ranging and flexible professional development portfolio which caters for the whole of the school workforce, encompassing teachers and all support staff.
