Something for everyone during Edge Hill diversity week
During the first week of February, Edge Hill will hold a week of events and taster sessions to highlight and celebrate diversity and to provide staff and students with a broader understanding of the related issues.
Both staff and students will be encouraged to learn from the experiences of people from different backgrounds, highlighting Edge Hill as an inclusive university, while also promoting acceptance of diversity and equal opportunities.
Diversity week is part of the CONNECT project which was set-up five years ago by Aim Higher and Student Services at Edge Hill. The project was created to combat social exclusion on campus, and raise awareness of diversity issues. The project runs a buddying scheme for students and there is also a social group that organises events on and off campus.
During diversity week there will be sessions and exhibitions to entertain and educate. The programme includes an Urdu Language taster session delivered by associate lecturer, Waheda Qaza and beginner's classes in Russian, Welsh and Portuguese among other languages.
There will be sessions looking at living with a guide dog on campus from a students perspective and Southport Hearing Dogs will be talking about their organisation, the work they do, and how having a hearing dog can make all the difference.
The Peace and Justice Group will hold an introduction to the Ormskirk group, talking about their work in Palestine and other issues such as the United Nations International Day of Peace, and nuclear weapons, as well as offering an opportunity for discussion and debate.
