A survey into the country's regional accents recently revealed that one in 10 people would change their accent at a job interview or when speaking to an employer to progress their career.

Topping the list of people most likely to do this were Liverpudlians, whose accent is considered to be one of the most difficult to understand in the UK.

Anthony Grant, Professor in Historical Linguistics and Language Contact at Edge Hill University, recently published a book The Mersey Sound: Liverpool's Language, People and Places, exploring the origins and evolution of accents in the North West.

Here, Professor Grant sheds some light on the unique sound of Scouse, where its origins lie and why it is so difficult to understand.
