Should ecstasy be downgraded?

Radio 4

Dr Philip Murphy, Reader in Psychology at Edge Hill University and Professor Colin Blakemore, a member of the independent UK Drug Policy Commission, discussed whether the illegal drug ecstasy is more dangerous than alcohol on the Today programme, Radio 4.

The programme was aired live this morning, Friday, 26 September, ahead of The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs meeting which is taking place later today to discuss whether or not ecstasy should be downgraded to Class B.

Senior police officers have written to a government advisory panel urging it to leave ecstasy as a Class A drug, the BBC has learned.

Dr Philip Murphy also gave his opinion on BBC Breakfast television and BBC World Service.

I think it should definately be downgraded, it's a party drug and, used responsibly, can be great.

I am also of the opinion that marijuana should be legalised. Anyone out there that has smoked a standard cigarette and a joint can tell the difference. You take a drag on a cigarette and it *hurts* - it's a painful thing. Smoking marijuana is much smoother and has a less dangerous health risk than smoking. It also has a much more soothing effect than alcohol.
