Clearing 2008 at Edge Hill University
DON'T PANIC - that's the message from Edge Hill University's Clearing team for A-Level results day this week.
While many 18-year-olds will be jumping for joy as they celebrate their A-level results, for some, the day can descend into stress and panic if marks don't match expectations.
Many students may think that not making the grade means they have automatically lost their university place, however, Edge Hill has an entire team dedicated to advising students in this situation on the options available to them to ensure they are placed on a suitable course.
For Anne Wilson, Head of Admissions at Edge Hill University, A-Level results day is the busiest of the year, as her Clearing team see scores of students seeking help and advice.
Here, Anne answers some of the most frequently asked questions about Clearing from students and parents:
What is Clearing?
Clearing is a system which students can use to find out which universities still have places available and which institutions can advertise courses that are not yet full.
Why do students use clearing?
While Clearing is mostly known as an option for students who don't get the grades they need, in some cases, it can also be for those whose circumstances have changed since they first applied to university. A student may have gained much higher qualifications than they expected or may simply have changed their mind about the subject they want to study.
Can I speak to the Clearing team on results day?
Yes. From A-Level results day on Thursday 14 August at 8am until 5pm on Friday 22 August, we have trained advisers and academic staff ready to talk to students. Support staff will also be available to talk about everything from finances to accommodation right up until the day the courses start. In the past, an offer of a place has been made over the phone there and then, with confirmation of the offer sent out within 24 hours.
Top tip for students:
DON'T PANIC!! If students have not done as well as they expected, they should still call their first choice. The place might still be available to them. If this is not the case, they can have a look for a course they would like and call that institution. Students can call the Edge Hill Clearing team on 0800 028 66 77.
The University is running an open day on Saturday 16th August, including campus tours and the chance to meet other students who will be starting in September.
