Edge Hill University Pipped at the Post

Edge Hill University was pipped at the post last night by the University of Exeter in the race for the coveted Times Higher Educational Supplement University of the Year Award for 2007. This year saw a record 90% of UK Universities entering themselves for the Awards in one or more of the 20 categories.

As Edge Hill is one of the youngest institutions, only receiving its university status in May 2006, even being nominated was a huge achievement. It has become the UK's fastest growing university, as well as ranking in the top 20 English universities in the National Student Satisfaction Survey this year.

Dr John Cater, Vice Chancellor at Edge Hill University said: "It is a real feather in our cap to be selected for such a prestigious award. Our congratulations go to the University of Exeter."

The award looks at the institution's performance in several areas such as research, teaching, access and business performance. Judges also look for specific evidence of particularly bold, imaginative and innovative initiatives that have advanced the University's reputation between 1 July 2006 and 30 June 2007. Those shortlisted are seen as examples of best practice in Higher Education.

Edge Hill is no stranger to the Times Higher Educational Awards as last year it scooped the prize for the best financial support package for students.

The University of the Year 2007 judges were Helena Kennedy QC, Dr Bernadette Porter CBE Rector at Roehampton University until retiring in 2004, Prof Lisa Jardine from Queen Mary?s University and winner of the Life Time Achievement Award 2006 and Gerard Kelly, Editor of the Times Higher Educational Supplement.
