Maths Masterclass

Pupils from Whitley Bay High School in North Tyneside calculated the code to success to win a mathematics competition at Edge Hill University. The Acute In All Proportions team was made up of Year Nine students Corrie Playfair, Jess Rietbrock and Katy Ames. They took the prize after battling their way past 174 other schools that were competing for the award.

Competition was tough at the ninth annual Edge Hill University Mathematics Challenge, with students competing with schools from as far afield as London, Derbyshire and Dorset. But the judges singled out the work of the Whitley Bay High School students' work. Stephen Feller, Head of Mathematics at Edge Hill University, said: "Communication plays a vital role in maths, which is contrary to what people think because you need a team effort to succeed in this subject. I believe that these students performed really well in their demonstration of the work that they did."

"We are the biggest provider of secondary school teachers in the country and it's good to see that we could even have some possible maths teachers here as well."

Hilary Radcliffe, a Maths teacher at Whitley Bay High School said: "We are so proud of the work that the students produced. This is a really good competition because it allows the students to explore the subject and get a grip of what maths is all about." During the course of the competition the students are given a number of problems to solve involving using and linking ideas from number algebra and geometry.
