Edge Hill Leading the Way in Perioperative Care

Nurses, health professionals and patients are set to benefit from the expertise of four Edge Hill University health specialists with the launch of a new book on operating department practice.

Core Topics in Operating Department Practice: Anaesthesia and Critical Care is essential reading for Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs), theatre nurses and all professionals working in operating departments throughout the UK. It also offers student nurses and ODPs an excellent foundation in several key subjects.

The book was the brainchild of Senior Lecturer Brian Smith, who edited the book, with specialist input from colleagues Paul Rawling, Paul Wicker and Chris Jones. Brian said: "Recent changes in medical roles and responsibilities have raised awareness of the vital role played by ODPs. They work with patients at their most vulnerable and therefore need a vast level of knowledge.

"This book is intended to inform perioperative practice - the period immediately before, during and after an operation - help professionals and students develop their skills and act as a day-to-day reference guide."

Written in a clear and concise format using case studies, Core Topics in Operating Department Practice covers such topics as anaesthesia, critical care, post-interventional care, enhancing care delivery, professional practice, leadership and resource management. It draws on a wealth of personal experience from a panel of diverse specialists.

This is the first in a series of three books providing comprehensive information for healthcare staff working in the operating department. Subsequent titles will cover Leadership and Management, Recovery and Post Anaesthetic Care and General Principles of Surgery.

Edge Hill's Faculty of Health is one of the main providers of education for health care professionals in Merseyside and the North West, with approximately 4,000 professionals trained and educated at Edge Hill every year.

In September, Edge Hill will become the first higher education institution to offer a fully online perioperative degree.
