Does Every Child Matter?

Leading academic and activist Pamela Calder will explore the background to Early Childhood Studies Degrees in the second of a series of public lectures at Edge Hill University that address the Government's Every Child Matters agenda.

Pamela, Chair and Co-ordinator of the Early Childhood Studies (ECS) Degrees Network, will give her lecture at Edge Hill's main campus, St Helens Road, Ormskirk, on Thursday, 3 May, at 6pm.

A chartered Psychologist, Pamela is also an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at London South Bank University.

Edge Hill's academic experts have adopted a child-centred approach to developing courses for new professionals in children's services alongside a research profile around the Every Child Matters agenda.

This lecture series builds on Edge Hill's reputation as a leader in child-centred education and training and forms part of its work in both stimulating debate around the issues and pioneering new course developments.

Mark McGovern, Reader in Social Sciences and organiser of the lecture series, said:

"Pamela Calder boasts a diverse and impressive track record in this area, both as an academic and an activist, and will provide a stimulating view of how the education of the next generation of people working in the field of Early Years is likely to impact on meeting the needs of young children in the future.

"She has researched and published widely in the areas of feminism, psychology, social policy, children and daycare, particularly in relation to the children's workforce. She was also a founder member of the National Childcare Campaign.

"Here at Edge Hill we are keen to explore the philosophy behind the Every Child Matters agenda as well as the practicalities of delivering a service that will make a significant difference to the lives of children and their families."

The lecture series is aimed at those working in the health, social care and education sectors relating to children and young people. A free buffet and refreshments are available to attendees. Bookings can be arranged through Sharon Buckley, email: buckleys@edgehill.ac.uk or contact Mark McGovern on 01695 584430.
