Putting Teachers in the Picture

Acclaimed illustrator Chris Riddell has sketched out the merits of children's books to teacher trainees at Edge Hill University.

Chris, a winner of two Kate Greenaway Medals for his outstanding illustrations in 'Pirate Diary' and Jonathan Swift's 'Gulliver', shared his views on children's literature with around 80 trainees studying Early Years, Primary Education and Key Stage 2/3.

"I particularly enjoy talking to trainee teachers as they are keen to learn more about children's books and the important role that illustrations play," said Chris, who signed books for students following the talk. "They'll obviously be reading the books alongside their pupils for many years to come so having a knowledge of the pictures as well as the words will stand them in good stead in the classroom.

"Children respond to pictures from year dot and it's a shame that they gradually disappear from fiction - I find it amazing that 'Harry Potter' isn't illustrated for instance."

Chris' visit to Edge Hill coincides with the end of 'Literature Matters' - a yearlong initiative aimed at encouraging the University's trainees to read children's books.

Val Chamberlain, Primary English Co-ordinator, said: "In collaboration with education book suppliers Madeleine Lindley, we host children's writers or illustrators on campus around three times a year and our trainees always respond positively to their talks.

"It's essential that teachers have a grasp of what they are asking their pupils to read and such contact with authors and illustrators is invaluable."

Edge Hill University is one of the largest providers of Primary Education in the country and the largest provider of Early Years training in the North West.
