A Peep into Ormskirk's Past

Edge Hill University is the venue for an exhibition to celebrate the history of Ormskirk on Saturday and Sunday 28th and 29th of October.

The exhibition, organised by the Ormskirk Historical Society, will showcase the famous Ormskirk Market Bell which was for many years used to signal the start of trading on market days. The Bell will be rung by Councillor May Blake when she officially opens the exhibition.

Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Ormskirk Historical Society, entry is free and open to all on Saturday 10-5pm and Sunday 10-4pm with light refreshments included.

Local business people and traders are supporting the jubilee event that will exhibit many items from the archives and memorabilia from as far back as the Iron Age

Reminders of Ormskirk?s past include items from the Remount Depot at Lathom House during the First World War, the history of Ormskirk Cricket Club and an insight into the little Mission at Scarth Hill.

Michael Rogers Chair of the Ormskirk Historical Society said: "We are really pleased to be working in collaboration with Edge Hill University to celebrate fifty years of our society. It?s the perfect venue to provide a peep into Ormskirk?s past and I?m looking forward to welcoming people keen to get a glimpse of the fascinating history of our town."

Alyson Brown, Acting Head of Edge Hill?s History Department said: "The department likes to keep abreast of the activities of many local and family history societies. There is immense public interest in the work that history societies are involved in and this is good for the subject generally as well as the study of history in university departments."

A model of Burscough Priory as it would have been in its glory days will be on display, as well as local historian Ron Cowell?s video of recent archaeological discoveries from before Roman times.
