Opportunities Grow in the Field of Geography

Students studying geography and environmental science degrees at Edge Hill University will be honing their skills to focus on career planning to prepare them for the world of work.

From September those studying BA and BSc degrees in Geography, GeoEnvironments and Physical Geography and Geology will be gaining career planning and management training as part of a new module called Geo-careers.

Dr Nigel Richardson, Head of the Department claims that many people do not realise the range of careers open to people studying for a degree in geography:

"Our students graduate with a broad range of marketable skills such as problem solving, communication, team working, research and project management. Employers really do value these skills and Edge Hill graduates go on to develop successful careers in fields from geo-environmental engineering and tourism, to accountancy, town planning and environmental consultancy."

Recent studies by the charity Young Enterprise found that employers place a high value on work experience and they urge universities to devote more time to practical skills, a view that Dr Richardson supports:

"This new module will ensure that there is an effective link between the academic subject-based study and careers training. Representatives from organisations such as the Environment Agency and the Royal Town Planning Institute will be delivering presentations and we will be encouraging students to take up work based learning, so that they can apply and extend their knowledge and skills in a professional setting. Students who have taken up our work based learning modules have worked with a range of hosts including the National Trust, Sefton Council and the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside."
