Edge Hill Hosts Sporting Talent

Talented youngsters from the St Helens area honed their sporting skills at a special training event at Edge Hill University's Ormskirk Campus.

Around 60 sporty students, who were identified by their schools as having exceptional talent in a range of sports, took part in the multi-skills event as part of the Junior Athlete Education programme in collaboration with Aimhigher*.

Edge Hill sport graduate and school sports co-ordinator Lee Doherty organised the event that was aimed at pupils who are at the top of their chosen sport, representing their professional club, county or country.

Lecturer in Sport Graham Smith was one of four from Edge Hill to lead the training sessions.

"This was a great opportunity for talented youngsters to take advantage of the facilities and training skills of staff here at Edge Hill," commented Graham. "There was such a wide range of talent in areas ranging from trampolining to rugby, athletics and gymnastics, to name but a few, that we decided to offer multi-skill sessions to test endurance, strength and agility."

Organiser Lee Doherty, a teacher at Broadway Community High School was delighted to pay a visit to Edge Hill, where he spent three years as an undergraduate in Sports Studies and a year studying to become a teacher.

"The Junior Athletic Education programme aims to balance pupils? lifestyles around sport and education and the group certainly enjoyed their day of training at Edge Hill. It was great to see some old faces and to visit the Ormskirk campus in my new role as teacher and School Sports Coordinator."
