More Teachers By Design

Edge Hill has launched the country?s first course to nurture the development of potential Design and Technology teachers.

In an attempt to tackle a national shortage of teachers in this area, the university?s Design and Technology Enhancement Course will enable those in related fields to progress onto studying for a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

"One of the main reasons for the shortage is the fact that degrees in Design and Technology rarely exist," said Charles O?Brien, Edge Hill?s Head of Art, Design and Technology. "Whereas a Maths graduate, for instance, could quite logically go on to become a Maths teacher, the progression route for those wanting to become a Design and Technology teacher is less obvious.

"In the main, students who wish to progress to a PGCE in Design and Technology have a background in, for example, art and design or media ? so their skills don?t quite match ? or they simply don?t meet the standard entry criteria.

"But it's not all about qualifications ? we will also consider those who have relevant experience, a flair or keen interest in the area of Design and Technology.

"The enhancement course will bridge any skills and knowledge gaps over a short period of time, meaning students can quickly get onto their desired course."

Students will initially be required to study full-time for two weeks in the summer ? in areas such as product design, electronics, textiles and food technology ? and then one night per week between September and May.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for those looking to forge a career in this area," added Charles. "After all, once students have achieved their PGCE, given the shortage, it shouldn?t be too difficult to secure a post in a school."

An added benefit of the enhancement course is that fees will be paid directly by the Training and Development Agency for Schools.
