More teacher trainees at Edge Hill

Despite cuts in Government funding and a reduction in the number of children of school age, Edge Hill has been asked to increase its teacher trainee intake by 64 places from next September.

The Training and Development Agency for Schools announced cuts in teacher training for 2006/7 and 2007/8, with 1000 fewer Primary and 2000 fewer Secondary training places funded.

However, Edge Hill has been allocated additional places for trainee teachers in Modern Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education, Design and Technology, and Music, reinforcing its position as the United Kingdom's largest provider of secondary school teachers and professional development opportunities for the school workforce.

Robert Smedley, Dean of the Faculty of Education, expressed his delight at the news. "All of Edge Hill's Initial Teacher Training provision has been awarded the highest possible grades for management and quality assurance in recent OfSTED inspections. This announcement is clear recognition by the Training and Development Agency of both the quality of Edge Hill's provision and our exemplary record in training teachers, particularly for the shortage subjects."
