The Number's Up for Ripon Grammar
Pupils from Ripon Grammar School discovered the winning formula in a national Edge Hill Mathematics competition.
The five-strong team, made up of Kieran Anderson, Benedict Clancey, Jacob Collinger, Hannah Lincoln and Andrew Cox, came top of the pile in the seventh annual Edge Hill Mathematics Challenge out of a large field of 175 teams.
Teams travelled to Edge Hill from as far afield as Devon, London and Newcastle, and Ripon Grammar Maths teacher Miss Mumby said: "We?ve won this contest twice before ? have never finished outside the top three in fact ? so this is another wonderful effort by the students."
After sweeping aside the 26 other finalists thanks to an excellent 15-minute presentation of their solution to a complicated trigonometry problem, Ripon Grammar earned the Pythagoras prize comprising of a Texas graphical calculator for every member of the school?s maths department.
Edge Hill?s Head of Mathematics Steve Feller said: "The standard of entries was very high which made judging extremely difficult ? full credit to Ripon Grammar for their efforts."
