Karen Heads in the Right Direction
Edge Hill drama student Karen McLeod has starred at a Liverpool film festival ? for her work behind the camera rather than in front of it.
The 22-year-old from Huddersfield has directed a short movie that was aired at the Eighth Liverpool Film Night, held at FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology).
Based on Samuel Beckett?s Endgame, the eight-and-a-half minute film juxtaposes war imagery with nature, layered over a menacing and intermittent soundtrack.
"Multimedia is becoming more and more integrated into drama and I had the opportunity to produce the film as part of my Directing module," said Karen, who is in her final year. "It?s my first ever stab at directing so it was a great thrill to have it screened at the festival."
The Liverpool Film Night showcases the city?s up-and-coming talent and is held twice a year.
"Apparently there were 60 entries with only eight selected to be shown on the night, mine included," added Karen. "After the films were run the directors then had to field questions from the audience - which was quite nerve-wracking - although much of the feedback was positive.
"As there was a wide variety of films, such as documentaries and music videos, people were interested to learn more about mine which was seen to be very 'different? from the rest."
After achieving her degree at Edge Hill, Karen hopes to study for an MA in Visual Language of Performance at the Wimbledon School of Art.
