Out of Africa...and into Edge Hill!
An African school inspector has paid a special visit to West Lancashire to gain an insight into the region?s education system.
Peter Michael Owiny, who supervises the Masindi district of Uganda, enjoyed a weeklong stay at Edge Hill also visited Crawford Village County Primary School in Skelmersdale.
Mr Owiny was welcomed by Maggie Northcott, a senior lecturer in Primary Education at Edge Hill, who spent five weeks in Uganda working as a 'Global Teacher? with a charity called Link Community Development.
"I was so impressed by Mr Owiny and his commitment to raising standards in Uganda that I invited him over to observe our system," said Maggie. "Apart from the weather, he has enjoyed his stay and will take many ideas back with him to put before his superiors."
During his stay at Edge Hill, Mr Owiny observed lessons, gave a presentation to Key Stage 2/3 English students, and visited the Maritime Museum in Liverpool and the St Helens Education Action Zone.
He said: "This is my first trip to England and I have found many things so very different. Class sizes here are much smaller than in Uganda, meeting mature students who have been able to change careers is also very new to me, as is e-learning and the resources available to students who are free to carry on learning outside the classroom.
"I?ve loved spending my time on campus at Edge Hill and the high quality of teaching in the surrounding feeder schools reflects good practice in the College."
