Award for Green Travel Plan

The accolade of 'highly commended? was officially announced at the Association of Commuter Transport commuter initiative awards held earlier this year. And at a recent visit to the Ormskirk Campus Stuart Wrigley, Lancashire County Council?s Head of Transport Policy presented a certificate to acknowledge the achievement to Dr John Cater, Edge Hill?s Chief Executive.

The Association of Commuter Transport promotes travel planning nationwide, with support for public and private sector organisations in developing schemes to reduce the number of people travelling by car.

Dr John Hindley is Edge Hill?s Environmental Manager based in the Estates Department: "Our work to produce a Green Travel Plan is already paying off, with an increased number of staff and students opting to use our edge link bus service into Ormskirk, free travel passes and permits, as well as the car share scheme with some choosing to walk or cycle each day," said John. "We are indebted to Lancashire County Council whose staff have worked with us to develop the plan and submit the marketing strategy for an award."

As a result of the ACT award Edge Hill?s Green Travel Plan has become a benchmark for other institutions in and outside the education sector. As one of the first institutions in the area to roll out a Green Travel Plan Edge Hill is now acting in an advisory capacity to other organisations

Stuart Wrigley, Head of Transport Policy at Lancashire County Council, said: "The incorporation of Edge Hill's Travel Plan with their Business Plan and the marketing of it to staff and students showed the value of an integrated approach. The TravelWise team at Lancashire County Council is pleased to have been an active partner in its continued development."

Dr John Hindley added: "It?s important to ensure that any travel plan has the support of staff and visitors so that people fully engage with strategies to reduce car use. I am pleased that the marketing strategy to support our Green Travel Plan has been officially recognised by the Association of Commuter Transport through the award. "
