Edge Hill Hosts Aimhigher Transitions Project
Edge Hill welcomed around 80 young people from across the Merseyside region to the Ormskirk Campus to take part in the launch of Transitions- an Aimhigher* project to help Year 11 students prepare for higher education.
Youngsters from Liverpool, St Helens, Wirral, Sefton and Halton gathered in the spring sunshine taking part in team building activities, as well as a speed dating style session to break the ice.
Motivational speaker Kevin Mincher encouraged the youngsters to set goals for the future and develop a positive outlook on choices after leaving school. And Edge Hill student advocates met the year 11?s to answer questions about university life.
Sue Burke is Transitions Project Officer based at Edge Hill: "The launch event was a huge success and feedback from those who attended is really positive," said Sue. "Students got to know each other to prepare for further sessions, and spent time considering their choices for the future. I?m sure that the day helped to raise aspirations, with many young people gaining confidence in their ability to achieve success through further and higher education."
The Transitions project aims to improve study skills for young people to prepare them for college and university. A residential visit to Edge Hill is set for the summer when youngsters will spend two days and nights on campus to try a taste of university life. Study skills sessions at City Learning centres are also planned for April, as well as a visit to the Rock and River outdoor pursuits centre in Liverpool. ENDS *Aimhigher is the Government initiative to encourage those under represented in higher education to prepare for, and take up study opportunities at universities and colleges.
