ACE REPORTS

Around two hundred pupils learned more about university life at a visit to Edge Hill?s Ormkirk Campus. Youngsters from ten schools from the St Helens area took part in the Aimhigher ACE (aiming for a college education) days enjoying a range of workshops, some introducing new study skills such as media production.

Neil Barlow is Widening Participation Officer at Edge Hill and responsible for organising events and activities to encourage young people to consider taking up higher education opportunities.

"As regional coordinator for Aimhigher, Edge Hill is always looking for ways to engage young people and show them that higher education is relevant to them," said Neil. " We offered a range of activities over four ACE days including TV production, website design, maths and English activities."

Those from Broadway Community High School were just one group to take part in producing a TV news bulletin, ACE Reports, when 13 year- old presenter Chris Lane enjoyed his on-screen debut.

"The day?s been great. It?s good to see what life is like at university. We did a lesson about timetables and now we understand the difference between the school week and how lessons and lectures work at uni," said Chris. "I'd like to take up media at university. I really enjoyed presenting the news feature, but didn?t realise how much goes into it. I did get very nervous in front of the camera but it was worth it to see the finished report."

Pupils also took a tour of the campus and enjoyed lunch in the Terrace caf? before returning to school at the end of the day.
