Visitors to Edge Hill got the chance to experience a simulated operating theatre when they donned surgical scrubs for the Operating Department Practitioners taster day.

Regional sixth form students as well as those thinking about returning to study got to grips with working with a range of clinical equipment, when around 30 of them signed up to find out more about the role of ODPs? the health professionals who care for patients whenever anesthesia or surgery is required.

Students took a hands-on approach, working in groups with a team of clinical representatives, to learn the basics of health care relating to anaesthetics, theatre and recovery.

Paul Wicker is Programme Leader for ODP Education at Edge Hill:

"The taster day was a really good opportunity for people to find out more about a very interesting but little known area of health care. ODPs are specially trained to carry out a range of theatre related tasks, alongside nurses and surgeons, both in theatre and on the wards in patient aftercare. From work in Accident and Emergency to resuscitation as part of a crash team, or in theatre, the role is extremely varied."

The Diploma in ODP is held at the Aintree Campus and St Thomas? Hospital in Stockport, with intakes in April and September.
