FROM SCOUSE TO SHAKESPEARE

From the language of Shakespeare to the scouse dialect, Edge Hill will be presenting speakers on a range of linguistic and language topics, at a conference based at the Ormskirk Campus on Thursday, 17th June.

The College of Higher Education?s one-day conference is aimed at teachers of English, as well as anyone with an interest in language and linguistics.

Professor Jennifer Coates, internationally renowned for her work in language and gender will be main speaker. The author of Women, Men and Language, Women in their Speech Communities and Men Talk is to present her view of gender and humour in everyday talk: 'It was so funny!?

Dr Jo Arthur, Senior Lecturer in English Language and Programme Leader for Edge Hill?s MA in English Language Studies, said:

"There are still some places left for the conference so anyone who is interested should get in contact to book a place. I?m looking forward to hearing one of our PhD students and now lecturer in Linguistics, Kevin Watson, present his work on the Liverpool dialect. He?ll be asking Is Scouse getting Scouser? Other presenters will include topics such as speech acts in Shakespeare?s plays and the discourse of school textbooks."

The conference also includes workshops in specialised areas in English language and linguistics, offering the chance to become familiar with data analysis, as well as an introduction to the most up-to-date resources available.
