BBC EXPERTS TENDER TV TIPS FOR STUDENTS

Film and television students at Edge Hill took advice on programme production from BBC executives at a Media Industry Day. Mervyn Watson, Executive Producer of Casualty and former producer of Coronation Street and script editor Jane Watson visited the Ormskirk Campus where they assessed first year students? project plans for new programme ideas.

Undergraduates studying media specialising in film and television presented their ideas to the panel, where they received feedback from the experts.

Carol Poole, Head of the Department for Media and Communication said: "Our industry guests were impressed with the quality of work that students produced and the professionalism of their presentations. Mervyn and Jane played the role of commissioning editors bringing a 'real world? context to the process. The day provided an opportunity for students to experience input from industry professionals, who offered constructive advice on programme production, as well as valuable tips for developing ideas."

Students? programme ideas included a men?s magazine series called The Sponge, a car magazine programme, Need for Speed, a new music series, Play List and a Cluedo style game show Detect and Convict.

Students are now preparing three-minute promos of their ideas for entry into the 2004 Promax Student Awards. Entry to the Hallmark Competition sets full-time college students the challenge of devising innovative ideas to create an integrated broadcasting feature to combine programming with commercial messages.

Claire Molloy is Course Leader for BA Media (Film and TV) she said: "The students are working on their award entries alongside their formal assessments of programme production. I?m sure that the industry input from TV production executives will impact positively on their efforts."
