Postfemininities in Popular Culture
In 2009 Dr Stéphanie Genz published Postfemininities in Popular Culture (Palgrave Macmillan), a monograph on contemporary femininity and its representations in (post)feminist theory and popular culture, and Postfeminism: Cultural Texts and Theories (Edinburgh University Press), a co-authored (with Dr Benjamin Brabon) academic monograph on postfeminism and its various manifestations in late 20th Century culture, academia and politics.
Transnational Media Experiences
Following the success of the Edge Hill – LJMU advertising colloquium in February 2008, the Media Department has recently launched a series of research seminars under the extended banner ‘Transnational Media Experiences’, aimed at establishing a regional network of research collaborations with a distinctive international flavour. In 2009 the seminars have attracted speakers from the universities of Manchester, Chester and Liverpool and have explored engaging topics ranging from racism and homophobia on the Russian-language Internet and media responses to post-devolution identity politics in British Wales, to the politics of English in cross-cultural cinema and media coverage of immigration in the enlarged Europe. Conference of the Feminist and Women’s Studies Association
The 2009 conference of the Feminist and Women’s Studies Association took place in June at the Bluecoat in Liverpool, under the Edge Hill University banner, co-organised by the FWSA’s treasurer, Dr. Stéphanie Genz (Media), and Dr Benjamin Brabon (English).
International Gothic Association
The North Gothic Network, a regional network of the International Gothic Association was established in July 2009, under the patronage of the Media and English Departments at Edge Hill University (contact Dr Stéphanie Genz at Stephanie.Genz@edeghill.ac.uk).
Grow Your Own
‘Grow Your Own’, the film that Carl Hunter co-wrote and co-produced was shown on BBC Two on the 14th August 2009. The Liverpool-based comedy/drama made its debut on the big screen in 2007.
Visiting International Professor of Film
Professor Roger Shannon has returned in 2009 as an annual Visiting International Professor of Film at the Cuban Film School in Havana.
Carol Poole
Carol Poole has continued her international activity to link the Department with various film organisations in Europe and beyond (FAMU – Prague; Hong Kong Baptist University; Písek Film School – Poland). Prof. Andrzey Bednarek from the Polish National Film, TV and Theatre School in Łódź, Poland, visited Edge Hill in February 2009. A selection of student films by Roman Polanski, Andrzej Wajda, Krysztof Kieslowski, Krzysztof Zanussi and current film students from Łódź Film School was shown at FACT in Liverpool.
