We provide a wide range of electronic resources to support your research and studies.  They are available 24/7 and this information will guide you to appropriate resources.
To help you get started and access the most relevant information for your research you will find:

  • key collections of essential journals for your subject, many available in full text
  • wider research resources, useful if you need to search across a number of disciplines

We also have access to full text newspapers and on-line dictionaries and for wider reading we have an extensive collection of e-books; please use our General Resources pages for more information and access. For more help with e-resources please see our frequently asked questions.

The Library Catalogue will give you access to all resources - print, e-resources and your module reading list.

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management tool that allows you to create a database of references. References can be added manually or imported from electronic journal collections and Google Scholar. For more information take a look at the RefWorks Guide.

Key Collections

International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance with Full text

Useful for the study of theatre and Performing Arts to locate journal articles. The subject coverage includes: Theatre, Dance, Drama, Performance Theory, Shakespeare, and Contemporary World Theatre.

JSTOR Collections

An extensive archive of journals, but as it is an archive, the most recently published issues (past 3-5 years) are not available. Use it to find older journal articles. It is extremely relevant for the study of the Performing Arts. The collections include JSTOR Arts and Sciences I, II, III and VII. The specific journals for  Dance, Drama, Music, Folk, Theatre, Film and Cinema are within  Arts and Sciences III.

Film and Television Literature

Use as a source of information on film to find full text journal articles.  Covers the entire spectrum of film and television theory, preservation and restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects and reviews.

The Shakespeare Collection

A useful collection when researching this eminent playwright. It includes the most recent Arden Shakespeare editions of the complete works, as well as editions and adaptations of Shakespeare’s works. Other works published during Shakespeare’s time, the Gordon Crosse Theatrical diaries, criticism, reviews and images.

Project Muse

Use this to find full text journal articles from the Humanities Collection. Research areas of Performing Arts including, theatre studies and music.

Academic Search Premier

Covers a wide range of subjects including Performing Arts. It is a good starting point when you are new to searching for journal articles  it can be used to find full text peer reviewed journal articles.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index

Use it to locate the bibliographic and citation details of journal articles. These details will help trace the full text article. Indexing lots of journals therefore can provide a good overview of articles for topics relating to the Performing Arts.

Meet the Learning Services Performing Arts Team

Our aim, in collaboration with academic colleagues, is to support students studying Performing Arts.

We are based in the top floor office of the University Library at Ormskirk.

We provide inductions, information literacy workshops, and 1-to-1 support.  We help you to get the most from the resources and services we provide. We work in partnership with academic colleagues to develop group sessions to help you maximise the resources available to support your studies.
