We provide a wide range of electronic resources to support your research and studies.  They are available 24/7 and this information will guide you to appropriate resources.
To help you get started and access the most relevant information for your research you will find:

  • ebook collections for your subject
  • key collections of essential journals for your subject, many available in full text
  • wider research resources, useful if you need to search across a number of disciplines

We also have access to full text newspapers and on-line dictionaries and for wider reading we have an extensive collection of e-books; please use our General Resources pages for more information and access. For more help with e-resources please see our frequently asked questions.

The Library Catalogue will give you access to all resources - print, e-resources and your module reading list.

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management tool that allows you to create a database of references. References can be added manually or imported from electronic journal collections and Google Scholar. For more information take a look at the RefWorks Guide.

English and History e-book Collections

Medieval Sources Online

Use to explore medieval history, from the Norman Invasion to the Black Death.  Full text of scholarly translations providing first hand accounts from the medieval period helpful for History essays.  As well as ebooks, it provides access to the Medieval Portal.

Early English Books Online

Early English Books (1473-1700) printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America. From the first book published in English through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare. Useful for the study of English Literature, Linguistics and History.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online

Works published in the UK during the 18th century plus thousands from elsewhere.  Useful for History and Literature research.

ACLS History E-book Project

A collection of humanities books (1855-2005) both in print and out of print. Books are via the Scholarly Publishing Office of the University of Michigan Library.  Useful for History and Literature research.

Literature Online

Important information source for literature research. Find full text journal articles, other key criticism and reference material. A large collection of English and American poetry, drama and prose to read and refer to.

Literature Resource Centre

Useful for information on literary authors from a wide variety of genres as it covers all writings from genres such as poetry, drama fiction and non fiction.

Literature Compass

Key literature criticism is featured in the journal articles that survey important research and current thinking in this area. Subdivided in to sections that cover, Medieval, Renaissance, Shakespeare, 17th Century, 18th Century, Romanticism, Victorian, 20th Century, Contemporary and American Literature.

Film and Television Literature

Use as a source of information on film to find full text journal articles.  Covers the entire spectrum of film and television theory, preservation and restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects and reviews.

JSTOR Collections

An extensive archive of journals, as it is an archive the most recently published issues (past 3-5 years) are not available. Use it to find journal articles. It is extremely relevant for the study of English and History. The collections include JSTOR Arts and Sciences I, II, III and VII. Specialist collections within this are, JSTOR Language and Literature and JSTOR Ireland.

Specialist Sources

British Periodicals Collection

British Periodicals traces the development and growth of the periodical press in Britain from its origins in the seventeenth century through to the Victorian 'age of periodicals' and beyond. Useful for historical research.

Census Programme

Census.ac.uk provides access for research to census records from 1971 onwards.  For guidance on viewing old census records 1841 to 1911 visit the National Archives.

Documents Online

Records held at the National Archives are useful for historical research. Find a wide range of primary source material including family history material, wills and other records. Public records containing government correspondence, domestic and foreign political policy, honours recommendations.

House of Commons Parliamentary Papers

Access the 18th 19th  & 20th Century House of Commons Parliamentary Papers. Useful for historical research as it a detailed primary source of information.

JSTOR 19th Century British Pamphlets

An invaluable source of information about the issues, debates and controversies that informed the 19th Century political arena. Useful for tracking development of debates. Comparing and contrasting view points over time.

19th Century UK Periodicals: Series1

Series 1, New Readerships. Includes Women's, Children's, Humour and Leisure/Sport periodicals from the 19th Century. A useful primary source for the study of 19th Century History.

Periodicals Archive Online

A collection of  20th Century periodical archives.  Subject areas covered include Language, Literature and History.  Specific interest for Film history and Victorian poetry.   

The Shakespeare collection

A useful collection when researching this eminent playwright. It includes the most recent Arden Shakespeare editions of the complete works, as well as editions and adaptations of Shakespeare's works. Other works published during Shakespeare's time prompt books, the Gordon cross Theatrical diaries, criticism, reviews and images.

Literary Encyclopedia

An encyclopaedia specifically for the study of literature, it containing articles written by scholars expert in their fields.  Useful for literary research on texts, authors, cultural movements and historical events.  This encyclopaedia enables literature to be put within its historical context.

Guardian and Observer Digital Archive

The Guardian (1821-2003) and The Observer (1791-2003) offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. Useful for historical research.

Daily Mirror Digital Archive

Daily Mirror from 1903 offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. Useful for historical research.

NewsVault

Provides a way of cross-searching to explore a range of historical newspaper collections. Simultaneously search or browse across:

Times Digital Archive The Times (London) 1785-1985. Use it to find newspaper articles. The entire newspaper is captured will all articles, advertisements and illustrations.

Illustrated London News Historical Archive Illustrated London News 1842 – 2003. Offers full page and article images with searchable full text. Presents a vivid picture of British and world events useful for historical research.

Burney Collection 17th-18th Century Rev. Charles Burney's collection of early English news media. A comprehensive primary source for this period, helps track the development of news.

Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers The 19th Century British Library Newspapers are a key set of primary sources for the study of this period. Providing a chronology of all aspects reported and using them to research can reveal the different opinions reported by different newspapers.

Academic Search Premier

Covers a wide range of subjects including History, Film, Creative Writing, Language and Literature.  It is a good starting point when you are new to searching for journal articles it can be used to find full text peer reviewed journal articles.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index  

Use it to locate the bibliographic and citation details of journal articles. These details will help trace the full text article. It indexes lots of journals therefore can provide a good overview of articles for topics relating to Film, Literature & Language, Creative Writing and History.

Bibliography of British and Irish History

Authoritative guide to what has been written about British and Irish history from 55BC to the present day. Useful to find the bibliographic details of books, articles in journals, review articles and articles in collected essays.  These details will help trace the full text.

Cambridge University Press Journals

A collection of scholarly journals useful for locating full text journal articles for English and History.

MLA International Bibliography

 Find the bibliographic details of journal articles, books and dissertations from all over the world.  Literary theory and criticism, folk literature, music, art are all included. The linguistics and language materials range from history and theory of linguistics, comparative linguistics, semantics, stylistics and syntax to translation. The dramatic arts are covered as film, radio, television and theatre.

Oxford University Press Journals

A collection of journals published by Oxford University Press that can be used to find journal articles. Literature, Language and History are some of the subjects covered.

Sage Journals

A collection of journals that can be used to find journal articles. Literature, Language and History are some of the subjects covered.

Swetswise Journals

A collection of journals that can be used to find journal articles. Literature, Language and History are some of the subjects covered.

Taylor and Francis Journals

A collection of journals that can be used to find journal articles for English and History.

Walter De Gruyter Journals

A collection of journals that can be used to find journal articles for the study of language.

Zetoc

An index that provides the bibliographic details for current journals and conference papers from 1993 to the present. The details of the journal articles can then be used to trace the full text.

Our aim, in collaboration with academic colleagues, is to support students studying English and History.

We are based in the top floor office of the University Library at Ormskirk.

We provide inductions, information literacy workshops, and 1-to-1 support.  We help you to get the most from the resources and services we provide. We work in partnership with academic colleagues to develop group sessions to help you maximise the resources available to support your studies.
